Abstract Sax – Reg E Gaines
What is most rewarding for me, being and so many interesting performers, and artists. Myself and Naeema Campbell attended Abstract Sax the first of Luna Stage special programming for Black History Month.
We welcomed back Grammy & Tony nominee Reg E Gaines. Abstract Sax for a one night only performance of spoken word, and evening of musical interpretations. The intimate setting felt even better after being greeted by Reg himself at the door. He made Naeema and I feel like we had known him forever. The stage was engulfed with white satin sheets.
Followed by an introduction by writer, Cyd Charisse Fulton, who gave Reg the introduction he deserved. He was in his element doing what he does best. Expression. His impactful words of truth accompanied by a bass and synthesizer. Reg’s charisma and lyrics touch the crowd, a diverse group, including family. What made it even better was the chemistry between the musicians, Calvin Gaines and Marie Wilson. There was an overall sense of love admiration and respect in the room.
“I didn’t know what to expect about Abstract Sax. I’d heard Reg E Gaines’ name thrown around in the world of poetry but never saw him perform live. So, I entered the show with the most open mind and no opinions. The show was fantastic. Thought provoking but also familiar and comfortable. Definitely want to hear and read more of his work.” -Naeema Campbell, local photographer, and jewelry designer.
Abstract Sax combined sweet poetry with social conscience lyrics. His message dense, from his experiences spanning a couple decades. It was a pleasure to see this memorable performance. Luna Stage continues too deliver once in a lifetime experiences in New Jersey’s Valley Arts District. Reg E Gaines also offered a free two hour poetry workshop this weekend.
