Upon arriving in Orange, New Jersey in 2011, one of the first things I remember doing was taking a tour with Molly Rose Kaufman. Then, the community organizer at HANDS, Inc. I quickly learned from her some of the rich histories in Orange like the Berg Hat Company, and Thomas Edison. But what stuck out to me was learning about how the construction of a highway, I-280, changed everything.
At the 2017 University of Orange Placemaking 9 event, on another walking tour (yeah, it’s our thing) I was able to lead a group and talk to employees from Serrani Bakery. Hear stories of how the business was forced to move after I-280 was built. This is just one of many stories about the Heart of Orange neighborhood that we want to offer micro grants to volunteer groups with community improvement ideas.
HANDS, Inc. and the HUUB are offering Neighborhood Project Grants to volunteer led groups based in the Heart of Orange. So, have you always been thinking about how to beautify your street or keep it safe with your tenant group but need funds? Apply! Receive up to $500 for materials, food, etc.
